The pandemic has affected almost every part of daily life for most Americans. As we continue to fight COVID-19, more and more places are requiring proof of vaccination—like bars, restaurants, gyms, movie theaters, housing associations, and even workplaces. If you’re looking to move to DC, it’s a good idea to plan ahead for housing and employment purposes. In this article, we’ll look at whether you need a COVID vaccine to live and work in DC.
DC Covid Vaccine Requirements
- Requirements for Working – All federal government employees are currently required to be vaccinated against COVID-19. There are over 360,000 federal jobs in the DC metropolitan area which equals 1 out of every 10 jobs in the area.
Additionally, all local DC government employees are also required to be vaccinated—including the mayor and other local government officials, police officers, firefighters, and more. There are around 36,000 individuals employed by the local DC government. Any job in the healthcare sector will also most likely require vaccination.
While private sector companies can choose whether or not to require vaccination of their employees, more and more organizations are choosing to require it in order to protect their employees.
- Requirements for Living – There are no government-mandated requirements for individuals to receive the COVID-19 vaccine in order to live in residences. However, if you don’t own your own home, each housing owner or business—whether it is an apartment building, condominium, or co-living space—has the right to require that their residents be vaccinated in order to live there. Just like how private workplaces are increasingly requiring vaccination, so too are residential companies in an effort to keep their residents safe.
While you can certainly still find a job and living arrangements that don’t require a COVID-19 vaccine, many businesses and housing facilities are now making it a requirement in order to keep everyone safe.
